The Case for Shoulder Season

Almost every recommendation on this site quietly assumes shoulder season, because the difference between late June and mid September in southern Europe is enormous, and mostly in favour of September.

The Case for Shoulder Season: Bled Castle

What changes

Accommodation in Mediterranean coastal areas drops 25 to 45 percent from the August peak once the second week of September passes. City hotels soften a little less, but availability improves markedly.

Temperatures fall into the low to mid twenties, which is the difference between enjoying a walk around an archaeological site and enduring it.

The trade-offs, honestly

Some things close. Mountain lifts and refuges in the Alps and Dolomites shut from late September. Island ferry frequencies drop in October. Beach clubs and seasonal restaurants on smaller Greek and Italian islands wind down.

Daylight shortens too. In late October in northern Europe you lose an hour and a half of useful light compared with August.

  • Best shoulder windows: late April to mid June, September to mid October
  • Watch out for: Easter week, Italian Ferragosto around 15 August, local festivals
  • Check before booking: lift and ferry operating dates, seasonal restaurant closures

Region by region

Southern Spain, southern Italy and Greece are at their best in May and late September, with warm sea in the autumn option. Northern Europe peaks later, with June to early September being the reliable window.

Japan has two distinct shoulder seasons of its own: late March to May and October to early December, both busy but for good reason.

How to book it

Shoulder season rewards flexibility by a week either side. Moving dates from the first week of September to the third often saves a further 15 percent.

Flights are the exception. Half term and school holiday weeks stay expensive regardless of season, so check school calendars in your own country before assuming quiet.
