Route overview

Most romantic trips are ruined by logistics. This one has exactly one long transfer and two bases, so you unpack twice in ten days.

The first half is rural Tuscany, somewhere between Siena and Montepulciano, with a car for short drives and an agriturismo where dinner is often the best option anyway. The second half is the Amalfi Coast, where the point is the terrace, the water and the light rather than a list of sights.

Afternoons are open on purpose. Nothing kills a honeymoon faster than a 15:00 museum entry you both now resent.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

Arrive in Florence, drive to the Val d'Orcia

Collect a car outside the city centre to avoid the restricted traffic zones. Ninety minutes south to an agriturismo with a view. Dinner on site.

  2. Day 2

    Pienza and Montepulciano

Short drives, cheese shops, a wine tasting in a cellar cut into the hill. Back before dark, which in this landscape is the best hour.

  3. Day 3

    Siena at a gentle pace

Forty minutes by car. The Duomo, the Campo, a long lunch, and no attempt to see everything. Consider the panorama from the Facciatone.

  4. Day 4

A day with nothing in it

Pool, book, a walk between cypresses, a hot spring at Bagno Vignoni if you want a short outing.

  5. Day 5

Thermal baths and a farm dinner

Saturnia or a local spa in the morning. In the evening, a cooking dinner at the farm, usually four courses and far better than the nearest restaurant.

  6. Day 6

    Transfer to the Amalfi Coast

The one long day. Drop the car in Florence, train to Naples, then a private transfer or ferry to Positano or Ravello. Arrive in the late afternoon.

  7. Day 7

    Ravello and the cliff gardens

Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo in the morning while it is cool. Afternoon by the water or on the terrace. Dinner with the coastline lit below.

  8. Day 8

    Boat day

A small chartered boat along the coast, stopping to swim in coves that the road never reaches. Lunch on board or in a fishing village.

  9. Day 9

Path of the Gods or a slow morning

The coastal footpath from Bomerano to Nocelle takes around three hours and is the best view on the coast. If walking is not the plan, Amalfi and its cathedral are ten minutes away by bus.

  10. Day 10

    Departure

Transfer to Naples for the flight or train home. The drive is slow in summer, allow more time than the map suggests.

Italy: Amalfi (Italy)
Italy: View of Positano

Accommodation approach

An agriturismo or small country hotel with a pool and a view for five nights, then a coastal hotel with a terrace for four. On the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is calmer and cheaper than Positano and the views are better.

Getting around

Rental car in Tuscany only, returned before the coast. Train from Florence to Naples, private transfer or ferry to the coast, then local buses and boats. Driving the Amalfi road in summer is not romantic.

What to eat

  • Agriturismo dinners cooked from the farm's own produce
  • Pecorino from Pienza with local honey
  • Vino Nobile di Montepulciano at the source
  • Seafood and lemon-heavy dishes on the coast

Planning tips

  • Check whether your Tuscan hotel has parking and whether the nearest town has a restricted zone. Fines arrive months later by post.
  • On the coast, hotels with a lift down to the water are worth the premium. Otherwise, expect hundreds of steps.
  • Book one special dinner, not five. Two nights of simple food makes the special one better.
  • September has warm sea and fewer people than August, and prices drop noticeably after the first week.
