Route overview

Italy has serious mountains and most itineraries ignore them completely. This route spends six days in the Dolomites and around Lake Garda, then two easy days in Verona so you finish on a terrace rather than on a trail.

Everything here is achievable for a fit walker without technical climbing experience. The one exception is the via ferrata day, which needs a guide, a harness and a head for exposure. It is optional and there is a hiking alternative for the same day.

Weather rules this trip. Afternoon thunderstorms are normal in the Dolomites in July and August, so walks start early and finish by mid afternoon, and every day has a lower-altitude alternative.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

Arrive in Venice or Verona, transfer to Cortina

Bus or rental car to Cortina d'Ampezzo or Val di Funes. Easy valley walk to shake off the flight, and an early night.

  2. Day 2

    Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop

The classic circuit, roughly 10 km with 350 m of ascent, with two refuges for lunch. Start before 09:00, the road toll and car park fill fast.

  3. Day 3

    Alta Via day section

A point-to-point section using a cable car for the ascent and walking down through high meadows. Around 12 km, mostly descending.

  4. Day 4

Via ferrata with a guide, or a lake hike

A half day beginner ferrata with a certified guide costs around 150 to 200 EUR per person including equipment. The alternative is the Lago di Braies and Prato Piazza walk.

  5. Day 5

    Transfer to Lake Garda

Three to four hours south. Check into Riva del Garda or Torbole. Afternoon swim, and the temperature difference from the mountains is dramatic.

  6. Day 6

    Water day on Garda

Windsurfing or sailing lessons in Torbole, where the afternoon wind is reliable enough that the sport grew up here. Or kayak the cliffs north of Limone.

  7. Day 7

    Ponale path by bike

The old road cut into the cliff above the lake, now a cycling and walking route. Rent a bike in Riva, allow half a day, and continue up to Lake Ledro if legs allow.

  8. Day 8

    Monte Baldo and the ridge

Cable car from Malcesine, then ridge walking with the whole lake below. Paraglide down if that appeals, tandem flights run most clear afternoons.

  9. Day 9

    Verona

An hour and a half from the lake. Roman arena, the river, a proper dinner and the first evening of the trip without a weather forecast to check.

  10. Day 10

    Departure

Verona airport is 15 minutes from the centre, or take the train to Venice or Milan.

Accommodation approach

Mountain hotels or a rifugio night in the Dolomites, then a lakeside hotel or apartment in Riva. Rifugio stays are dormitory style, cheap and part of the experience, but book them in spring for summer dates.

Getting around

A rental car makes the Dolomites far easier, since trailheads are poorly served by bus outside peak summer. Around Garda, ferries and bikes cover most of it. Train from Verona onwards.

What to eat

  • Speck, canederli and barley soup in the mountains, where the cooking is more Austrian than Italian
  • Refuge lunches, simple and enormous
  • Lake fish and olive oil around Garda
  • Risotto all'Amarone in Verona

Planning tips

  • Check the mountain forecast every evening and be willing to swap days. Storms in the Dolomites build fast after 14:00.
  • Broken-in boots with ankle support, not trainers, for the high trails.
  • Carry cash for refuges, many still do not take cards.
  • Lifts and many refuges close from late September until December, which limits this route outside summer.
