Venice Beyond the Day Trippers

Venice receives an enormous number of visitors who arrive at ten and leave at five. If your trip overlaps only with those hours, you will see the version of Venice everyone complains about. Two nights on the islands changes almost everything.

The two quiet windows

Before 09:00 and after 18:00, the main routes between the station, the Rialto and San Marco are genuinely walkable. The same alleys that were shoulder to shoulder at midday are empty, and the acoustics of the city become noticeable.

This is the single argument for paying more to sleep on the islands rather than in Mestre. If you are on a tight budget, Mestre is sensible, but take the train back in for one evening at least.

Districts that absorb visitors badly and well

San Marco and the Rialto area take the pressure. Cannaregio north of the Strada Nova, Castello east of the Arsenale, and Dorsoduro around San Sebastiano stay comparatively calm at all hours.

Giudecca is residential and reached by a five minute vaporetto. Sant'Elena, at the far eastern end, has a park, a football pitch and almost no visitors.

  • Quiet and central: Dorsoduro, western Castello
  • Quiet and cheap: Giudecca, Sant'Elena
  • Avoid basing yourself: directly beside San Marco or the Rialto

One paid visit is enough

The Doge's Palace, the Accademia, the Frari, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Peggy Guggenheim are all good. Choosing one or two rather than four leaves you with what Venice is actually for, which is walking without a destination.

The cheapest boat tour in the city is the number 1 vaporetto down the Grand Canal. A single 24 hour transport pass covers it and everything else.

Eating without being fleeced

Venice has a reputation for bad expensive food, earned mainly on the tourist arteries. Off them, bacari serving cicchetti with a small glass of wine are cheap and very good. Two or three stops makes a dinner for 20 to 25 EUR.

Look for handwritten daily lists, and eat fish only where the menu changes. Anything offering a fixed tourist menu with three courses for 15 EUR near a bridge is a warning, not a bargain.

Practical notes

Wheeled luggage and bridges do not mix. Pack light, or pay a porter at the station. The access fee for day visitors on peak dates does not apply to overnight guests, but confirm the current rules before you travel because they have changed more than once.

Acqua alta, the seasonal high water, mostly affects November to January. Hotels issue boots and the city carries on.
