What a Day in Europe Actually Costs in 2026
Daily budget advice online tends to be either fantasy or fear. The honest answer is that a comfortable, non-luxury day in southern Europe now costs between 90 and 140 EUR per person, and you can push that lower with specific choices rather than general frugality.

Accommodation is the whole ballgame
Where you sleep is usually half your daily spend. A hostel dorm in Lisbon or Seville runs 25 to 40 EUR. A private room in a guesthouse is 60 to 95 EUR. A three star hotel in a central district is 110 to 180 EUR, and more in Venice, Amsterdam or Paris.
The biggest lever is location. Moving two transport stops out of the historic centre typically cuts 25 to 40 percent from the same standard of room.
Food: lunch is where the saving lives
Spain's menu del dia is 13 to 18 EUR for three courses with a drink. France's midday formule is 19 to 26 EUR. Italy's pranzo fisso runs 12 to 20 EUR. The same cooking in the evening costs roughly double.
Add a bakery breakfast at 3 to 5 EUR and a light dinner of market food or a shared plate at 12 to 20 EUR, and you have eaten well for 30 to 45 EUR.
- Bakery or cafe breakfast: 3 to 6 EUR
- Set lunch menu: 12 to 26 EUR
- Light dinner or tapas: 12 to 25 EUR
- Coffee standing at the bar: 1.20 to 2.50 EUR, and sitting down often costs double
Transport
City transport passes are 6 to 12 EUR a day and usually worth it from day two onwards. Intercity trains are the variable: booked two months out, Rome to Florence can be 20 EUR, and booked on the day it can be 70.
Buses are consistently cheaper than trains and consistently slower. For journeys under three hours the saving is rarely worth the time on a short trip, but on a three week trip it adds up.

Sights
Budget 15 to 25 EUR per day for entries if you are doing one or two paid sites daily. Major attractions have crept up: the Colosseum combined ticket, the Alhambra and the Vatican are all in the 18 to 25 EUR range.
Free options are better than their reputation. Many national museums in Spain have free evening windows, most UK national museums are free, and churches across Italy hold major paintings at no charge.
Three realistic daily totals
Tight but pleasant: 70 to 90 EUR. Dorm or shared apartment, set lunches, one paid sight every other day, walking everywhere.
Middle: 120 to 160 EUR. Private room slightly outside the centre, set lunch and a modest dinner, a transport pass and a paid sight most days.
Comfortable: 220 to 320 EUR. Central three or four star hotel, two restaurant meals, taxis when convenient and any sight you want.
What genuinely wastes money
Airport taxis where a train exists. Resold attraction tickets. Restaurants with laminated photo menus on a monument square. Buying train tickets late. Paying for a guided tour of something that explains itself.
Notice that none of those involve depriving yourself. Budget travel done well is mostly the removal of avoidable premiums.
